After a sold-out August, Florence is embracing the end of summer with a flurry of hotel openings meant to turn heads with bold design and playful concepts.

The elegant (with garden): Dimora Palanca

A discreet entrance and a choir of cicadas welcome travelers to Dimora Palanca, which seeks to continue its 19th century history as a cultural center for the artistic community. Now, this spacious and superbly appointed five-star accommodation near Porta al Prato welcomes art lovers seeking a tranquil setting for their creative endeavors. Impeccable ornate parquet floors, frescoed lounges and a daring 50-piece contemporary art collection by Lucca native Paolo Dovichi define this refined property filled with natural light and spectacular chandeliers (the sculptural cloud-shaped light in the breakfast room is breathtaking). Wake up to a Campanile view in one of the 18 rooms with high ceilings, crisp stucco and neutral color palettes before strolling through the palace’s private garden, one of the few inside the walls from the city. Whether you choose to stay or not, the hotel Mimesi Restaurant serves fine and sophisticated cuisine ingeniously supervised by innovative chef Giovanni Cerroni, who has worked alongside Michelin-starred chefs in Puglia and Tuscany. Savor one of the tasting menus (from 110 euros for five courses) expertly accompanied by carefully chosen Italian wines: the flagship dishes include an anchovy salad in vinegar, red tagliatelle with caviar and a remarkable consomme of armagnac, as well as a delicious main chicken and peppers with creamy demi-glace toppings, all served in what were once the kitchen quarters of the noble palate.

The fun: 25hours Hotel Piazza San Paolino

Opening September 8 25hours Hotel Piazza San Paolino is a playful addition to the city hotel scene of the German brand, whose vision is to have “a 25hours Hotel in every cool city ”. A few steps from Piazza Santa Maria Novella, the design of the hotel is inspired by that of Dante Divine comedy (timely, given the celebration of the 700th anniversary of the Florentine poet’s death!): Scenes from heaven and hell happily guide you through the virtues and vices of Dante’s world. A restaurant, a courtyard garden, a Negroni bar and a grocery store complete the culinary offer. Culture is not lacking either: the Cinema Paradiso cinema hall will regularly show films. Bikes are part of the package and riders can find everything they need for short or more ambitious routes. Expect spacious accommodation with mid-range entry-level rooms from 21m2 up to the Gigantic bedroom with a separate living room, and even an apartment, Casetta nel Giardino, with its own private pool, pizza oven and barbecue.

The reimagined: Place Firenze

Florence Square recently relaunched its sought-after “home away from home” in Piazza Santa Maria Novella.
